Stuff that caught my eye

eyeOS

eyeOS is a “browser-based operating system”. It is a php application that provides desktop metaphor for a web based content management system. However it is interesting to
try. Playing with it I created a VMware image of eyeOS based on Puppy Linux distro. Puppy Linux has low footprint and it is very fast. This is why I chose it for this work.

I assume you are familiar with the basics of VMware and you know how to run an image in VMware Player or VMware Workstation. There are two ways to use eyeOS on this image - from the image itself and from a remote computer (or VMware host computer)Using eyeOS from VMware image User Interface

Using eyeOS this way does not require a VMware host computer to be connected to a network with a DHCP server. It is the simplest and quickest way to get to your new browser-based OS.

As soon as the VMware image is started you will see this screen and by clicking on the icon indicated by the arrow you will open browser on the eyeOS server running on the virtual machine

Using eyeOS from other computer

In this case you need to open console by clicking on the “console” icon indicated by the arrow on the next image.

\In the new window type ifconfig command to figure out IP address of the image. Read virual machine IP address from the output. Now point your web browser (on the VMware host or another computer on your LAN) to the IP of the new image.
